Brief summary of the community issue or opportunity the project will address:

Young people tend to construct a comfort zone based on the experiences and people they meet on “the block” or their side of town. As they mature it becomes more difficult to get them to try new things or be in a novel situation. Unwillingness to step out of their comfort zone often results in making rash decisions, missed opportunities and may cause conflicts when they encounter someone they view as “different”.

State how the project will work – the activities and timeline:

"Be Exposed” will engage youth from 7 to 15 years old into three peer groups. This ambitious project runs for 1 year and has bi- monthly youth run meetings. The program will use a three stage experiential learning model: Stage 1: Do, Stage 2: Review, Stage 3: Plan. Each peer group will be required to work with the peer group below them in age. Stage 1: Facilitated peer groups will develop a menu of activities, which they plan and coordinate and implement. Stage 2: Facilitated peer groups will review what happened and what they learned. Stage 3:Start how to tackle the next round of experiences This 3-stage model was chosen because experience alone is often not sufficient enough to promote paradigm shifting. The raw experience when linked with facilitated exercises will help build communication skills. Activities will include a pre and post recorded discussion about expectations. The participants will “BE EXPOSED” to any activity that will expose them to something new and will promote a new way of thinking. Youth may “BE EXPOSED”: Visits to foreign restaurants, cross-cultural experiences, workers that will allow shadowing, live music performances, non-traditional sporting events, open discussion with foreign students, overnight trip to a surprise destination Each student will commit to being exposed to a minimum of 4 activities.

State the results you wish to achieve:

It is s expected that this project will help young people will start to construct a broader worldview. They will be able to evaluate and discuss how current paradigms may impact their ability to work effectively with people who are different. They learn to try new things before forming an opinion and saying no. They will learn that life if full of new and exciting experiences and stop running from new or unfamiliar situations. One major goal is that the project will develop skill that will foster better peer and 1:1 communication and relationships. They will know that there is no place they cannot go!!!
